Guest Post- Green New Deal!

Hello Ocean Heroes! It’s Rowan and-

Nope nope nope. It’s not Rowan (DUN DUN DUN, SURPRISE!), it’s actually NAOMI! I’m the lead of the Society To Stop Climate Change, and that’s what some of you might know me as - that’s where I normally blog! Here at Ocean Heroes though I’m a member, researcher, and writer!

Today, I’m going to give you a taste of my blog - and a bit more information about climate change - by talking about The Green New Deal!

The Green New Deal is essentially a proposal or set of goals that aspire to have countries reach net-zero by 2050. Initially, it was pushed by The Sunrise Movement, and then by the US politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The Green New Deal is for the USA, but there are versions of it all over! Plus, with the US being a huge carbon emitter, less carbon from us will have a huge impact!

The Green New Deal wants to help solve climate change, and ALSO to address things like injustice, racism, etc. Contrary to what the people who are against this say, it will not take away all cars, it will not take away ice cream and dairy and meat… Former US president Franklin D Roosevelt created The New Deal after the great depression - something that required lots of spending on the government’s side, and lifted the US out of The Great Depression. The Green New Deal is similar to this, but this time with more of a focus on being green.

This answer is pretty simple: Governments need to act on climate change! Our individual actions will (sadly) not be enough, and although they certainly help, we need action from the government!
